Border Terrier grooming
Border Terriers are built for the Cheshire countryside, and their weatherproof coat is designed to be hand stripped, not clipped.
The coat
Understanding the Border Terrier coat
A Border's coat 'blows' when it's ready to come out, looking scruffy and lifting away from the body. Stripping at this stage is quick and comfortable for the dog. Clipping instead leaves the dead hair in place and gradually turns the coat soft and fluffy.
- Coat type
- Harsh, dense, wiry outer coat with a soft undercoat
- How often
- Hand stripped 2 to 4 times a year
- We recommend
- Hand Stripping
Popular styles
Full hand strip
All the dead coat removed for a neat, natural Border outline.
Rolling coat
More frequent, lighter stripping that keeps the coat in layers and always looking tidy.

Caring for your Border Terrier at home
- 01
A weekly brush with a bristle brush or hound glove keeps the coat healthy.
- 02
When the coat starts to look open and scruffy, it's ready to be stripped.
- 03
Avoid clippers. Once the coat has been clipped it can take a long time to restore.
